Review by Meggie from USA:
“This retreat was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The beauty of the
surroundings is breathtaking. Days are filled with hiking, yoga, beautiful
scenic views, swimming in rivers, and relaxing on hammocks. To do yoga in the
natural element of the jungle has always been one of my dreams. Johanne is an
excellent yoga teacher with years of experience, knowledge, and training. Her
classes focus on alignment of the body.
We began class each day with a light meditation and moved on to a more
structured yoga session. After each yoga class I felt my body was more in-line
and I was more aware of my posture and my overall being in the world. Each
class put me into a blissful state of relaxation. Classes are gentle yet
detailed and good for all levels of yoga.
Included in the retreat are three deliciously prepared vegetarian meals. These
meals have to be made with love or they would never be so good. I am not a
vegetarian but very much enjoy healthy food that taste good too. The food at
this retreat went beyond my expectations. Freshly prepared every day with a
variety of different options, Johanne’s cooking left me feeling fully
nourished. Johanne and Armando were excellent hosts, their love for nature,
yoga, and well-being made this fully inclusive retreat one I will never

“I have to admit, I was a bit nervous at first. I thought “a yoga retreat? But
I’m only a beginner. What if I can’t keep up? But The yoga classes at Tambo
Ilusion are specifically designed for what ever level you are at. Johanne, the
yoga instructor will cater specifically to your needs. I fell in love with yoga
while at this retreat. It was so relaxing and yet there was always something to
do whether you want to take a dip in the pond on the property, hike to the
river near the town, go on nature walks, or just lounge around in the
This retreat lets you choose how adventurous, relaxing, or vigorous you want it
to be. The food is to die for vegetarian, or vegan food. There are also plenary
of fresh fruits surrounding you on the property, if you are willing to compete
with the monkeys a little. I tried cacao fruit, which was my favorite, although
there is not much meat in it. It has a similar taste to bananas. Guaba fruit,
which is a sweet fluffy melt in your mouth fruit, and there are plenty more
including mangoes, papayas, plantains, and much more.
You will find yourself falling asleep to the sound of musical jungle animals at
night. This music is way better than any chirping noises you’ll find on iTunes.
All in all the Tambo Ilusión experience is definitely one worth having.”

“After traveling for five weeks in Peru, Tambo Ilusion was a little oasis, a
refuge from the chaotic pace of the city. I stayed for five days participating
in the yoga retreat. It was such a balancing, nurturing experience. Stretching
my sore backpacker-body and calming my wandering mind.
Johanne and Armando have truely created a magical space with so much potential
for learning and healing. Everyday I would have two hour and thirty minute
practices with Johanne in the most beautiful studio I’ve ever been in. With one
flickering candle and the company of fire flies I became re-centered.
Included as well was a herbal bath in the stream flowing from the lagoon, a
Reiki session and a hike through the jungle. I would recommend Tambo Ilusion to
any friend or fellow traveler looking for a safe enchanting experience in the
Review by Iris Tettamanti from Switzerland:
“I had a very warm and hearty welcome at Tambo Ilusion. After my arrival, I had
the chance of tasting one of the delicious dishes I would enjoy during the
whole week. The cabins are simple but cosy and very clean. Even the lack of
warm water wasn’t an issue, at the contrary. You’ll enjoy it after a sweaty and
interesting walk thru the forest or a yoga class.
Besides the varied and healthy food, the spectacular site of Tambo Ilusion is
unforgettable. The small lagoon allows you to swim every day in the freshest
water and observe the fauna and flora, like colorful birds, butterflies, and
Important of course are the yoga classes, they were just great. Not a class like
the other, always something new to learn, very varied, and Johanne is a very
competent teacher. She’s able to adapt the class to every student and gives you
advises for any situation / request. Not only on the yoga mat is Johanne a great
source of knowledge, but also on nutrition and health. Go, enjoy and learn!
My unforgettable and most spectacular moment: observe monkeys playing in the
trees during yoga class, wow!”
Review by Berber from Netherlands:
“I have stayed at Tambo Ilusion from Monday the 21st till Friday the 25th of
My time at Tambo Ilusion was an experience that went far beyond my expectations.
I have never felt so relaxed, energized, and inspired, all at the same time. It
is a perfect place to be introduced to the world of yoga and learn about a
lifestyle aimed at living together with nature. After having left the jungle, I
feel I am well supplied with the foundational background of yoga and mediation
practices, and I am armed against any kind of stress I might encounter when
returning to the working bee life in Europe again.
Although the main focus of the retreat was yoga, a practice that, at the time,
was new to me, there was much more to it. Tambo Ilusion is blooming with
activities and opportunities to connect with nature, yourself and come down
again. After and in between the 2 hours of yoga classes, I enjoyed swimming in
the natural lake, a class in apiculture (bee keeping), a Reiki massage and a
guided tour through the jungle, the house’s back garden.
The hospitality that Johanne and Armando offer is of a rare kind. The warmth and
care they have for their guests comes so naturally, you feel like royalty at
your friend’s home. The spacious tambo (little hut) I stayed in, was equipped
with a very comfortable big double bed and hammocks outside. A great treat
after an intense day of yoga, super food and walks through the jungle.
The cooking is delicious and fresh. Johanne knows a lot about nutrition and
enjoys sharing her knowledge, recipes and food experiences. I tried many
dishes, fruits, seeds and shakes I had never had before and I learned much
about their various qualities. While enjoying these culinary creations, I have
had many great and inspiring conversations. Their enthusiasm and passion for
Tambo Ilusion and everything else they do, is very contagious.
The beautiful jungle surroundings with fireflies and a nocturnal orchestra of
birds, monkeys, and crickets at night, gave the entire stay a magical touch. I
am very grateful I visited this yoga retreat and I would recommend it to
anyone. It has been a highlight of my time in South America!
Review by Joshua from Australia:
“I can highly recommend Tambo Ilusion for anyone interested in yoga,
permaculture or simply a tranquil holiday retreat. We have spent the last 5
days in the lush jungle surrounds, which offer a perfect setting for reflection
and clarity of mind. The space is dotted with rustic looking tambos, a
picturesque lagoon, a reading room with plenty of hammocks, and an elegant
maloca for yoga practice. The tambos are provided with super cosy beds with
mosquito screens, shelves with candles and plenty of hammocks – in short, warm,
inviting and comfortable. The maloca is particularly special – it is grand in
size, and the panoramic view gives it a serene and calming aura. The perfect
space for a yoga session.
Armando and Johanne are gracious hosts, offering a warm welcome and an
invitation to their family life. We were treated to generous breakfast, lunches
and dinners. Johanne has a passion for vegetarian cooking and nutrition, and it
is possible I learned as much about these two topics as I did about yoga. The
food was delicious and high in energy, and definitely contributed to my feeling
of wellbeing at Tambo. We are not looking forward to returning to the world of
normal food! It was also lovely to be involved in the conversation and to learn
about life at Tambo – the story of the property, Armando`s vision of the place,
and the life stories of both of the hosts. The loveable cat Mishii is also
worth a mention for his highly amusing and adorable behavior.
Johanne was a warm and inviting teacher of yoga. We were beginners, but never
felt shy in asking a question or clarification. Her soothing voice is calming
and particularly suited for guided meditation. There is also a clarity of
instruction which was very welcoming. We undertook 1.5 hour sessions twice per
day, which is quite a significant amount of time in the maloca. As beginners it
was great to spend so much time practicing, and to have so much tranquility in
which to reflect on the practice. We feel we have a good foundation now to
continue practicing the poses and also motivated to find a teacher at home. She
is also a practitioner of Reiki and introduced us to this form of healing in a
session at the maloca.
Armando has done an amazing job with the property at Tambo and guided us on a
walk through the property, including the rainforest. His passion for learning,
and the earth, plants and wildlife at Tambo shone through as he explained the
relationship between everything on the property and the work involved (and
still to come!) in shaping it into such a beautiful retreat. It was so
refreshing to see someone so dedicated to nature, with such high ambitions and
such a commitment to making the place reach its potential. He is also a keen
apiculturist and is committed to permaculture – anyone with an interest in
these fields would draw a lot of inspiration from a conversation with Armando.
I will not hesitate to recommend this place to my family and friends. It is sad
to leave, but I have no doubt I will be back. Tambo Ilusion is a paradise – the
surrounds are perfectly complementary to the yoga practice you undertake in the
maloca. There is a definite romance to the place – not to be missed.”
Review by Florence from Switzerland:
“I was 2 weeks in Tambo Ilusion and it was memorable, beautiful, and exciting.
That swim in the lagoon is great for cooling and the rest there is unique.
Incidentally, I was also grateful for the refreshing cold shower. And the food
was amazing. I felt very comfortable and in good hands.
Thank you for the interesting conversations and the great yoga lessons!”

Review by Rebecca Warner from the UK:
“My experience at Tambo Ilusion was absolutely wonderful. I am a relative
beginner and Jo made sure all the sessions were just right for me – she is a
fantastic and attentive teacher, and also a completely brilliant host! The
maloca where the yoga sessions are held is a beautiful space which Jo and
Armando built themselves and looks out over the surrounding rainforest.
While yoga is the main focus of the week, there is a lot more to staying at
Tambo Ilusion. The afternoon hike to a waterfall was spectacular, and the
private lagoon is a lovely place to swim during free time. Jo is very
knowledgeable about nutrition, and her cooking is wonderful. And the Reiki
session – the first for me – was great! Jo and Armando are particularly keen to
make sure that every guest gets the most out of being there, so each day can be
tailored to your preferences – there is no pressure. Every day I was there I
felt healthier and more peaceful – the yoga and meditation practice, coupled
with the beautiful environment, warm reception from Jo and Armando, and
delicious wholesome food, (plus super comfy bed in cosy cabin!), really made a
difference to me and I left feeling restored and positive.
It seemed a little daunting flying off to Peru and going straight into the
jungle, but all my fears were allayed as soon as I arrived. I was collected
from the airport as arranged beforehand and taken straight to the retreat where
Jo had lunch prepared. Straight away I was made to feel right at home, and when
I left at the end of the week I really felt I was leaving friends behind!
My week at Tambo Ilusion was a hugely positive experience, and I’ve come home
recommending it to many of my friends and family. If you’re considering it, I
say go for it – you won’t regret it!”
