The quiet amidst the jungle sounds drops you into the very heart of gratitude, stillness, and connection to the bigger picture. Friendships forged over meals and adventure bolster your trust and hope in the goodness and kindness of strangers. Each day is a delight for the body, mind and spirit; truly a breath of fresh air for this holiday!
We're doing it again (our 7th annual retreat)! Come celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with an experience that will saturate you in gratitude and nature's inherent abundance. Slow down and enjoy life at nature's pace in the jungle and on the beach. Sunsets, hammocks, and inner calm await.
Once Zoe tried the tropical life for the holiday season, she never wanted to do the holidays any other way! She's been joined by her kids, her hubby, her brother and hundreds of friends over the years, and often by repeat attendees who, like her, just can't stay away. In fact, the owner of our lodgings, the Hotel Cafe Playa Negra, first discovered this sleepy surfer village on retreat with Zoe. He fell in love with the slow-paced lifestyle, quiet serenity of the jungle and beach, and decided to open his own retreat center. The love has come full-circle, with him now hosting this annual retreat focused on connecting to source, unplugging from routine, and filling your cup.
The Hotel Cafe Playa Negra features a restaurant for snacks, lunch and a full bar. Breakfast and Dinner will be catered and included in the retreat, with meals eaten together community-style. A pool, upstairs lounging balcony, hammocks, and little nooks for tucking into to read a book or take a siesta provide plenty of places to chill out and relax. The yoga studio provides everything you'll need for twice-daily practices, including props and mats. Hotel Cafe Playa Negra is walking distance from other food and drink options, a small local convenience store, and an easy walk to the beach, as well as ear-shot from howler monkeys and the sounds of the jungle.
Rooms feature bohemian style airy decor, AC and private bath. Options for double, triple, or bunk beds available. Private rooms available at $500 additional cost.
Morning Yoga sessions are usually alignment-based vinyasa flow; a little peppy, a little challenging to kickstart the day.
Afternoon Yoga sessions are often more relaxed, featuring yin, restorative and hatha yoga stretches for all levels.
On Thanksgiving we gather together and have a real feast, with all the trimmings. Vegan, gluten-free, and all dietary needs will be accommodated. And on the Friday after Thanksgiving, we head out on a day-long catamaran boat excursion. Last year we had a school of dolphins join us along our route through the ocean! We'll pack a beach picnic for midday, and enjoy a swim-stop and snack break, before we catch the sunset from our boat perch. It's really the best day ever!
Down time can be spent as you wish. Some retreaters are drawn to the beach for surf lessons and other fun, others crave outings like zip lining and horseback, while others just want to enjoy the quiet of poolside lounging and naps in their cabinas. Anything goes, and this paradise is exactly what you make it.

"I can not tell you what a wonderful and insightful time I had in costa rica with everyone. It was a trip filled with many ascensions for me -I was reading a book about Angels (Conversation with Angels) in my cabina - I got to zip line which felt like flying - and I felt uplifted on a vibrational level by everyone I met on the trip, the food we ate, and off course your amazingly varied and challenging yoga classes and meditations." ~Michelle B.
"Retreat Rocked. Good Times." ~Aaron W.
"Zoe's yoga was so amazing, and it was obvious that somehow she tailored it perfectly to our trip and to Costa Rica and our glorious retreat with a "theme" every time we practiced!
Playa Negra and the Retreat center were so cool and very spiritual for me with surrounding natural beauty, clean air and water, good food.
Everything was perfect, from our hosts and their generosity, to everyone we met along the way. It was Pura Vida for me and my best vacation ever!" ~Irma H.
"We enjoyed the yoga - learning about the chakras and pairing it with the 7 sessions, laying out the goal at that first session, the journaling, and I liked the small unique things we did like massages and holding hands and such. It felt unique and like a bonus - like something we wouldn't get at home in class.
Accommodations and travel: We had the best arrangement there!! It was totally worth the upgrade; thank you. Fresh towels when we asked was an unexpected bonus too." ~Alex A
