Rancho Margot is a sustainable and self-sufficient eco-lodge located in the rainforest of Costa Rica. Featuring numerous indoor and outdoor venues amidst our 400-acres of pristine rainforest, we are an ideal location for retreats focused on yoga, mindfulness practice, nutrition, herbal medicine, the healing arts, massage therapy and meditation.
In 2004, the Sostheim family bought 400 acres (162 hectares) and chose the name Rancho Margot, in honor of Juan Sostheim’s mother. At that time, the valley was an over-grazed cattle ranch, barren of trees and wildlife. Today, thanks to reforestation and efforts to propagate indigenous species of plants, the Ranch is alive and teeming with hummingbirds, butterflies and is home to one of the largest varieties and densities of birds in Costa Rica. At Rancho Margot, we recognize that education is the key to progress. By preserving and expanding the rainforest, we live what we teach everyday.
Rancho Margot welcomes groups interested in hosting Holistic Wellness Retreats. The Ranch is graced with a lush landscape where you and your guests will be serenaded by the soothing sounds of our multiple streams, the Caño Negro River and the rich sounds of countless bird species.

Each spacious bungalow is equipped to house couples or families of up to four people. Bungalows are available with two queen beds or one queen bed and two single beds. An additional single bed may be made available upon request to accommodate five guests if need be. Beds feature orthopedic mattresses set within handcrafted frames. All furniture, right down to the rocking chairs and the bedside reading lamps, is built on-site with locally grown teak.
Bungalows have private bathrooms with a hot-water shower stocked with our handmade soaps and outside wrap-around terrace with hammock and sitting area. Additional amenities include ceiling fans and mosquito netting.
Bunkhouse accommodations appeal to students and budget-minded travelers who want to spend the majority of their time enjoying the Ranch and the outdoors. Each two-person room is equipped with one bunk bed topped with orthopedic mattresses and a large window that opens to a wall of foliage dotted with the vibrant reds of heliconia flowers. Separate storage boxes are available on the Bunkhouse’s communal terrace.
Bathrooms with warm-water showers are shared. The Bunkhouse’s communal terrace offers a covered open-air space to play games or music at large family-style tables and benches. There is also a wide hammock for reading, stargazing and soaking in the soothing sounds of the rainforest.
Food types available:
- Traditional (non vegetarian)
Physical health and nutrition of all living things is an important component of sustainable living at Rancho Margot. Providing optimal nutrition is one way we invite visitors and residents to embrace healthy, more sustainable lifestyles.
Our focus on nutrition starts on the Rancho Margot farm. The animals are raised in a cruelty-free environment on a vegetarian diet. Rancho Margot’s cows enjoy twenty-five pastures, where they roam on a daily basis feeding on fresh grass. The pigs rotate from their pen to an adjacent pasture to graze and play in the mud, where they receive nutrients that complement their diet. Chickens wander an enclosed pasture feeding on insects and high protein red worms cultivated through our compost system. They produce 60 to 80 eggs a day, the shells of which are returned to their feed to enhance their diet.
Our gardens and animals provide nutrition to our guests, volunteers and employees. Fresh vegetables and fruits are harvested from the garden every day. Pork is a menu staple as are a variety of vegetarian dishes. The cows are milked every morning at 7:30 a.m., a task you are welcome to join! The fresh milk is used to make mozzarella, “queso fresco,” or fresh cheese, yogurt and butter. The cheese making process is also an activity you can observe depending on the timing of your stay. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared by experienced chefs and served buffet style. Naturally, the menu is seasonal as it is based on the freshest available ingredients. What we don’t produce on the farm, we buy from local farmers or in-country sources. Slowly and surely we are replacing the foods we have to buy, with our own product.
