The Guru Is You
by Bhava Ram of Deep Yoga
Each of us was born with this power, yet we have been largely disenfranchised from it as a result of the fast-paced, high stress way of life that is so pervasive in our modern times.
When we are disconnected from our inner power, we suffer. We make poor lifestyle decisions, eat the wrong foods, rely on medications to mask our symptoms, and diminish our mental and physical health in the process. The sister sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda (the Science of Life) offer a pathway home to our inner power.
By balancing our lives, living in accordance with the natural rhythms of the world, and gently moving away from the sensory overload in our lives, miracles begin to happen. Our bodies and minds begin to heal. We feel more vibrant, creative and alive. Our anxiety and apprehension give way to faith in ourselves. We come to realize our capacity to determine our own destinies.
I have a personal experience of finding this inner power that not only changed my life—it saved it. I was a foreign correspondent for network news, covering some of the most momentous events of our times in Afghanistan, the Persian Gulf, Africa, South America and Asia. A broken back and failed surgery ended my career.
Suddenly, a global life was ended and I was confined to a body brace, unable to sit up for a meal and walking with cane. Despite heavy medications, I became dark and depressed, angry and despondent. Four years later, I was diagnosed with stage four throat cancer from the first Gulf War and told I would not live for two more years. That’s when I plummeted into an abyss of self-pity and despair.
Literally on the brink of death, I departed from western medicine, detoxed off fourteen years of medications and heavy drinking, and found Yoga. Not just the Yoga of doing postures, but the fullness of this ancient science. I began to eat an organic, plant based, whole food diet while meditating, breathing deeply, and doing Yoga poses.
I fasted as well; taking eighty-five pounds off a body that had become obese over the years of disability. I learned to shift my mind from the erratic mental activity of my ego to a deeper place within my heart. I learned to accept my back and cancer, to release my anger and self-pity, and to replace these negative emotions with gratitude, compassion, acceptance and equanimity.
Two years later, I was healed and whole.
I had found my power, my inner guru, and was able to chart a new course in life. Most importantly perhaps, I learned that what I was able do was nothing special… that if someone as dark and broken as I was could transform their lives, almost anyone can. In my new life, I’ve seen this happen so many times that it continues to astonish me.
There have been so many amazing people facing great challenges who have come to Yoga and fully transformed their lives, healing beyond what they ever dreamed possible and finding their own unique ways of making a contribution to the world as a result of their journey.
If you’ve lost touch, please know that your inner guru is waiting for you. All it takes is the first step, which is believing in yourself. By embracing the eight steps below, you can launch your journey today and watch as your own life miracles unfold.
